Currently: Startup Growth Advisor at Vercel

Cam Robinson

I help early-stage startups get the most out of Vercel. Before that I competed on skis.

I grew up outside Boston, spent three winters registered with FIS as a freestyle skier, and now live in Pittsburgh working with the startup ecosystem at Vercel.

In between I built Vercel's global Startups SDR team from scratch across AMER, APAC and EMEA. I still coach reps on the side, because the part of this job I like most is watching someone get measurably better at something hard.

Career

Four years from brokering freight in Boston to advising startups on agentic infrastructure. Most of that was outbound, which is the least glamorous and most honest way to learn how to sell.

Skiing

I competed as a freestyle skier registered with FIS, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, from December 2014 through April 2017. Freestyle is a judged sport, which means you spend far more time drilling one piece of a trick than you ever spend performing it.

What freestyle taught me about the job

Freestyle skiing is a judged sport, which is a strange thing to be good at. Nobody hands you a clock. You throw a trick, five people decide what it was worth, and you get a number that is partly about you and partly about how you made it look. The only way through that is repetition: break the trick into parts, drill the part you are worst at, and put it back together until it stops being a decision.

Outbound is the same shape, which is why I ended up liking it. A cold call is a rep. So is a sequence, a discovery question, a handoff. None of them work on talent. They work when you have broken the thing into parts, found the part you are worst at, and drilled it until it is automatic, then gone and gotten judged on it again.

That is also why I moved into leading and coaching rather than away from it. Building the Startups SDR team from scratch across three regions was mostly the same job as learning a new trick, except the person drilling the parts was somebody else and my job was to see which part was actually broken.

Drill the part you are worst at until it stops being a decision.
